It's getting more and more white outside. Trees look like static white statues with fragile tentacles on the end. The air is thick and slow. I'm inside and enjoying this view.
Christmas in Karosta is different. When it becomes darker during the day, the windows of the housing blocks gradually lighten up by flickering christmas lights, but the church seems to stay empty. This in comparison to Holland where during the Christmas mass, hords of people are hurrying to get a spot to sit as if they want to make up for their absence of the last year. The case here is different due to the Russian Orthodox religion, which celebrates Christmas on the 7th of January. Days like the 24th and the 25th of December pass by like normal working days.
It was a surprise for us, after having our own small Christmas celebration, that on the morning of the 25th, four girls arrived to take part in the workshop. Though their interest is more based on becoming a DJ then making films, the enthusiasm of the girls gave a positive impulse to the Story Of The Snowflake I described before. We decided on which object will represent which character and the main character, the old man, took shape. Next friday, the Take 1 of Scene 1 will start. A lot of work to be done before then.
Most of the girls have finished their highschool and are studying in Riga or Liepaja. They all speak fluently Russian and Latvian, but prefer to commmunicate in Russian among eachother or in a nonverbal giggeling way, which either says something about them or could have to do with Derek or me..
I haven't figured out yet how I much I can stuff into the 2,5 weeks that are left. This animation-project will take a lot of my time, but how much is left for making other visual material? What about my plan to make a visual map? This map could be very interesting, cause everything which is covered in snow right now, will be revealed in a warmer season and create a total different experience. But instead of dreaming about how it could be interesting, I'll start working on it. If it would be only a little bit warmer I could hold my camera without loosing the feelings in my fingers and toes.
