For the project Innovation in Integration, we were invited by K@2 to present the AudibleImage / VisibleSound project in Daugavpils. The city of Daugavpils - geographically close to Russia - has a strong Russian feeling. This is partly because of the high amount of Russian citizens, but the appearance of the typical blockhouse-architecture strongly influences the Soviet picture. Entering the city of Daugavpils, the river Daugava surrounded by ruins of Tsaric fortresses welcomes you. They say - and nobody exactly knows - that the tunnels of the fortress reaches the prison which is situated at the other side of the Daugava.

The center of Daugavpils is dominated by a hypermarket which seemed to be parachuted in by space-creatures. There is no connection between the Soviet architecture and the high consumer building and its citizens. Coming from a different time and place, the ugly construction looks completely bizar, but is well appreciated by most of the Daugavpilsers, besides the outdoor market they now have access to some high quality 'products'.

To program a screening, a workshop presentation and a performance on the same night wasn't such a good idea. Since the performance was scheduled last, it had to suffer from this busy schedule. Nevertheless, the audience was enjoying it.

The participants of the workshop were younger and less experienced then our usual target group, so we had to change the content of the workshop a little bit. We decided to divide the workshop into 3 parts - one day for exploring different ways of dealing with sound and image, the next day for gathering audiovisual material on location [fortress] and the last day was reserved for editing and finalizing video and sound. The results of the workshops were publicly presented on the last evening.

This was the first time we showed the screening of the selection of videowork in collaboration with Montevideo. More then half of the audience was female, which is quite normal in Latvia where the female/male ratio is something like 9/3.. The screening and performance night was well attended, although it was a quite experimental programme.

Afterwards, the Daugavpils organizers recommended to have more of 'such presentations' in Daugavpils. 'People here aren't used to see this kind of works'..
